Grace Period (Visa)

The grace period is the window of lawful stay the UAE grants after a residence visa is cancelled or expires, during which the person can remain without overstay fines while arranging a new status — typically a new job and work permit, a family sponsorship, a self-sponsored visa, or departure. Since the immigration reforms that took effect in late 2022, the length varies by residence category, with longer windows for certain categories instead of the old single short period; the exact entitlement should always be verified against the person's specific visa type at the time. The grace period is the central clock in employment exits: visa cancellation usually follows termination quickly, and everything — final settlement negotiation, job hunting, school continuity for dependants — happens against it. Miss the deadline and daily overstay fines begin, converting a routine transition into a regularisation problem.
