Change of Status

Change of status (also called status adjustment or amendment) is the in-country process of converting from one UAE immigration status to another without leaving — for example, from a visit visa to an employment residence visa, from a cancelled residence to a new employer's sponsorship, or from family sponsorship to a work-based visa. The application goes through ICP or, in Dubai, GDRFA, and a fee replaces the old practice of exiting and re-entering (the 'visa run') to activate a new entry permit. Change of status matters because it keeps the person lawfully present and continuously resident — important for school enrolment, banking, and avoiding overstay — and because its availability depends on current status being clean: overstay fines, absconding reports, or bans block the conversion until resolved. It is the standard mechanism in job changes, post-divorce sponsorship shifts, and visit-to-residence transitions.
