Residence Visa

A residence visa is the authorisation allowing a foreign national to live in the UAE for an extended, renewable period. It is always anchored to a basis: employment (sponsored by the employer), family sponsorship, property investment, study, retirement, or self-sponsored routes such as the Golden and Green visas. The standard issuance chain runs entry permit, medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometrics, then residence issuance — now recorded digitally against the Emirates ID rather than stamped in the passport in most cases. Validity periods vary by category, and the visa lapses if the holder stays outside the UAE beyond the permitted absence period for their category. Residence status is the hinge for nearly everything practical in the UAE — bank accounts, tenancy, schooling, sponsoring family — and its cancellation starts a grace-period clock, making timing critical in job changes, divorces, and disputes.
