Direct answer. You renew your Emirates ID with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), through its website, the UAEICP app or a customer happiness centre. ICP's FAQ also lists authorised typing offices among its service channels. Residents and GCC nationals can renew once less than six months of validity remain, or after expiry. UAE nationals can renew in the card's final year. ICP gives a 30-day grace period after the expiry date. After that, a late-renewal fine of AED 20 per day applies, capped at AED 1,000. The fine is set by Cabinet Resolution No. 89 of 2022 on administrative fines for ICP services. For most residents outside Dubai, the ID is renewed together with the residence permit on one unified form. ICP lists AED 100 per year of residence for a resident's card, plus a AED 100 smart application fee. You can check an application on ICP's ID Card Status page with your application number or Emirates ID number. This guide covers each route, the fees, the status check, the fine and when it can be waived, and what happens when a travel ban or a case is on your file.

When you can renew, and how the grace period works
ICP's FAQ sets the renewal window by nationality. UAE nationals may renew when the card expires or during its final year. GCC nationals and residents may renew when it expires or during its final six months. A resident cannot start renewal more than six months before expiry.
The grace period is the part people misread. ICP says a grace period of 30 days from the card's expiration date is granted to complete renewal. The late fee starts only after that grace period ends. So a card that expired last week costs nothing extra yet. A card that expired two months ago is already collecting the daily fine.
A duty sits behind the deadline. ICP's published list of card holder duties says the holder must abide by the dates and legal procedures for renewing the card. It also says to carry the card at all times. The UAE government portal says the Emirates ID is used to get government services, so an expired card can cause trouble beyond the fine. Expect those services to stall until you renew.
How to renew your Emirates ID, step by step
The route depends on who you are and which emirate issued your residence.
Residents outside Dubai: the ID is renewed with your residence
For residents, ICP's terms say the ID renewal is submitted with the residence application, through the unified residence and identity form, in every emirate except Dubai. The same terms say the service needs the necessary approvals and a medical examination with a "fit" result.
In practice, your ID renewal rides on your residence renewal. If you work for a company, your sponsor usually starts that file. If you are sponsored by family, the family sponsor does. Residence renewal itself, including sponsor documents and grace periods after a visa lapses, is covered in our visa extension and residence renewal guide. This guide stays with the card.
Residents in Dubai
ICP's terms exclude Dubai from the unified form. In Dubai, the service catalogue of the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs Dubai (GDRFA) lists the issuing of residence permits, while the ID card renewal is an ICP service. How your Dubai ID renewal is filed next to a GDRFA residence renewal can change and depends on your file. Confirm the current route with GDRFA Dubai or with ICP on 600 522222 before you apply.
UAE and GCC nationals
UAE nationals renew the card on its own, with a passport that is valid for at least three months. If the passport is also due, ICP says you must use the combined Emirates ID and Passport Renewal service. The head of the family, a guardian, a legally authorised representative or the adult applicant can file. GCC nationals renew a card with five years' validity. ICP's document list for them asks for proof of the basis for their stay, such as a study certificate, proof of employment, property or investor documents, or attested proof of kinship.
The steps on ICP's smart services
ICP lists six digital steps:
- Submit the application through your chosen channel, logged in with UAE Pass.
- Review the form and correct any data the system pulled in.
- Attach documents only if the system could not retrieve them automatically.
- Pay the fees.
- Give fingerprints and a signature at a service centre, if required.
- Receive the card by authorised courier for the standard service, or collect it from an ICP centre for the urgent service.
For residents, ICP lists two documents: your passport and a personal photo. The photo must be recent and must not be the same photo printed on your current card. Anyone aged 15 or over gives fingerprints and a signature at an ICP service centre. ICP's FAQ says an appointment is required in advance for certain centre visits, including biometric and fingerprint procedures.
One trap catches people every year. ICP says an application returned for changes is cancelled if you do not fix it within the set period. Watch your email and the app after you apply.
Emirates ID renewal fees
ICP publishes the card fee by category. These are the card lines only, not the full cost of renewing a residence.
| Category | Card fee listed by ICP | Other listed charges |
|---|---|---|
| Resident | AED 100 for each year of residence | AED 100 smart application fee |
| UAE national under 21 | AED 100 for a five-year card | Urgent service AED 150, at service centres only |
| UAE national 21 and over | AED 200 for a ten-year card | Urgent service AED 150, at service centres only |
| GCC national | AED 100 for a five-year card | AED 100 smart application fee; urgent service AED 150 |
For a resident on a two-year residence, the listed lines add up to AED 200 for the card plus the AED 100 smart application fee. That sum is our arithmetic from ICP's figures. Residence fees, the medical test and any typing-office charge are separate and are not in this table.
The urgent 24-hour service has limits. The UAE government portal says it is for UAE nationals and GCC nationals living in the UAE. Other expatriate residents can use it only to replace a card, not to renew one.
ICP fees can change by Cabinet decision. Check the current figure on the ICP service page before you pay, and be wary of totals quoted on third-party sites.
How to check your Emirates ID status
"Status" means two different things, so check the one you need.
Is my card still valid?
Your card's expiry date is printed on it. ICP's FAQ says the electronic version of an issued card can be viewed in the ICP UAE app, and the digital ID can also be used through UAE Pass. Note the expiry date, and add six months' notice to your calendar.
Where is my renewal application?
ICP gives three ways to track an application:
- ID Card Status page. On ICP's ID Card Status page, enter your application number (PRAN) or, for renewal and replacement applications, your Emirates ID number.
- Your account. If you applied through your own smart services account, open My Applications or My Requests.
- Application tracking. On smartservices.icp.gov.ae, choose application tracking and enter your application number, which starts with 010.
If the online check fails, call ICP on 600 522222. ICP lists a completion time of five days for the renewal service. If you applied through a typing office, keep the receipt, because it carries your application number.
Emirates ID fine for late renewal
ICP calls it an administrative delay fee, not a criminal penalty. Here is where each part comes from.
- The law. Article 16 of Federal Law No. 9 of 2006 lets the Cabinet set fines of up to AED 1,000 for breaches of Articles 6 and 10 of that law: reporting changes to your personal data, and accepting or retaining a person who has no card. Article 16 does not itself name late renewal.
- The schedule. Item 2 of the annex to Cabinet Resolution No. 89 of 2022, on administrative fines for ICP services, sets AED 20 for each day of delay, with a maximum of AED 1,000. It covers failing to start renewal after the time limit, and failing to report a change in your civil data within 30 days. The resolution came into force on 3 October 2022; these are the figures as published then.
- The practice. ICP's FAQ says the fine starts after 30 days from the card's expiry date.
How the fine adds up
At AED 20 a day, the AED 1,000 cap is reached after 50 fined days. With the 30-day grace period first, that is roughly 80 days after the expiry date. Someone who renews 40 days after expiry owes roughly 10 days of fine, about AED 200. These are approximate figures from our own arithmetic. ICP's system calculates the exact amount when you apply.
Do not confuse it with the overstay fine
The same resolution sets a different line for staying in the country after a residence permit expires or is cancelled: AED 50 per day. That is a residence fine, not an ID fine, and it has no AED 1,000 cap in that line. If your residence has lapsed as well as your card, read our guide to checking and paying overstay fines first.
ICP also runs an Easy Payment initiative for people with outstanding financial obligations or fines to the Authority. Its FAQ gives AED 500 as the minimum amount to benefit. Ask ICP whether it fits your case.
Can the late-renewal fine be waived?
Sometimes. Article 4 of Cabinet Resolution No. 89 of 2022 exempts three groups from its fines:
- Someone who left the UAE, has been outside for more than three months, and whose card expired after they left.
- Someone whose residence or card expired after deportation by order, administrative resolution or court ruling, or whose passport was seized pending cases. This must be proven by a letter or receipt from the authority that deported them or held them in the case.
- Someone who had no card for the period before gaining UAE citizenship and before obtaining a family book.
The same article lets the ICP Chairman, or an authorised representative, waive all or part of the fines on humanitarian grounds or for other reasons he thinks fit.
You ask for this through ICP's Request for Exemption from Delay Fees service. ICP says the request is submitted together with the ID card application, and lists a completion time of two days. Its terms repeat the court-case rule: if the ID expired after deportation, or because a passport was held in a court case, you must bring proof from the authorities. Prepare that letter before you apply.
Renewing with a travel ban, an open case or an absconding report
A travel ban and an ID renewal run through different systems. A court travel ban restricts you from leaving the country. ICP's published renewal terms do not mention travel bans. What they do require, for residents, is that the renewal goes through with the residence application, with the necessary approvals. So the real question is whether your residence can be renewed.
Three situations change the answer:
- Your passport is held in a case. You may not be able to complete the renewal while the passport is held, so ask ICP. If your card expires while the passport is held, the held-passport exemption above can remove the late fine, with a letter from the authority holding it.
- An absconding report is on your file. An absconding report can affect the residence file, which the ID renewal depends on. See how to check and remove an absconding report.
- The ban comes from a debt or a judgment. Lifting it is a court step, not an ICP step. See UAE travel ban lifting and what is automatic in travel ban removal.
How a specific case affects your residence and ID renewal depends on the file and on the authority's decision. Confirm with ICP or GDRFA, and with a licensed UAE lawyer if a case is open. If a deportation order is involved, the order has to be dealt with first; see deportation in the UAE.
Lost card, damaged card or changed details
Renewal is for a card that is expiring or has expired. A lost, stolen or damaged card goes through a separate ICP replacement service, and the new card keeps the validity of the old one. ICP's holder duties say to report a lost card within seven days. We cover replacement in a separate guide.
If your details change, such as a new passport, ICP says to report it within one month. Cabinet Resolution No. 89 of 2022 sets the same AED 20-a-day fine, up to AED 1,000, for reporting a change late. If you lost your passport, our guide to the police report for a lost passport covers updating your residence record.
Mistakes that cost money
- Waiting for the expiry date. Residents can renew six months early. Starting early leaves room for the medical test and the fingerprint appointment.
- Ignoring a returned application. ICP cancels it if you do not fix it in time, and the fine keeps running.
- Reusing your card photo. ICP rejects a photo that matches the one on your current card.
- Paying a third party's estimate. Check the fee and any fine on ICP's own channels before you pay.
- Assuming one payment clears everything. The card fine and the residence overstay fine are separate lines. Clear both.
- Letting an employer keep your card. The UAE government portal says companies may not withhold employees' Emirates ID cards. ICP's duties list says not to leave the card with any organisation unless a court has ordered it.
When to get legal help
Most renewals are a form, a fee and a fingerprint visit. A lawyer helps when the renewal is stuck behind something larger: a travel ban, a case holding your passport, an absconding report, a cancelled sponsorship, or a large fine you think is wrong. You can find an immigration lawyer on LEXAI and contact them directly. For a first orientation on your situation, try the LEXAI AI assistant.
This is general legal information, not legal advice. ICP and GDRFA set the procedure and fees, and they can change. Confirm the current position with them or with a licensed UAE lawyer before you rely on it.

Founder of LEXAI
Milad Mevlevi is the founder of LEXAI, a bilingual legal directory for the UAE. He studied International Business at the University of Salford. The idea for LEXAI grew out of his own experience seeking legal help in 2022. Searching for “lawyers near me” brought up listings, but he struggled to find verifiable credentials, reviews he could trust and detailed biographies that would help him choose a lawyer with confidence. That experience led him to create LEXAI, with the aim of making it easier for people to assess legal professionals before contacting them.
