Visa Amnesty
A visa amnesty is a time-limited government initiative allowing people with irregular immigration status in the UAE — overstayers, absconding-report subjects, people whose sponsors vanished — to regularise their stay or exit the country with overstay fines waived and, typically, without the entry bans that would normally follow. The UAE has run such programmes periodically, most recently in 2024, with ICP and GDRFA operating dedicated processing centres. During an amnesty window, beneficiaries can usually either obtain a new status (finding an employer or sponsor and converting in-country) or depart with an exit pass and a clean file enabling lawful return later. For practitioners, amnesty periods are triage time: identifying which clients qualify, clearing absconding reports that would otherwise block processing, and sequencing applications before the window closes — because after it does, the standard fines-bans-deportation framework resumes in full.
