Misdemeanour
الجنحة
A misdemeanour is the middle tier of crime in UAE law, sitting between minor contraventions and serious felonies. It covers offences punishable by fines and/or shorter imprisonment — common examples in practice include insult and defamation (including online), simple assault, breach of trust in smaller amounts, and many traffic and regulatory offences. Misdemeanours are tried before the misdemeanours circuit of the criminal court, and some can be resolved by a penal order from the prosecution without a hearing, or closed through the victim waiving the complaint where the offence is complaint-dependent. It matters because misdemeanour convictions still create a criminal record that can affect employment, licensing and good conduct certificates, and for expatriates some convictions carry deportation consequences. You meet it most often through workplace conflicts, social media posts, bounced-cheque-related fraud allegations, and altercations — situations where early legal advice and a possible settlement with the complainant change outcomes dramatically.
