A family visa is the residence permit a UAE resident sponsors for dependants — typically a spouse, children, and in defined cases parents. Eligibility turns on the sponsor's income meeting the applicable salary threshold, suitable accommodation, and documentation such as attested marriage and birth certificates; reforms in recent years relaxed older profession-based restrictions, so qualification is now primarily financial. Sponsored family members' status is derivative: it depends on the sponsor's residence remaining valid, so the sponsor's job loss, visa cancellation, or death starts clocks for the whole family, and divorce raises transfer-of-sponsorship questions (mothers can sponsor children in defined circumstances). Sons typically age out at a set age unless studying, while daughters' rules differ. Family-visa work in practice involves attestation chains for foreign documents, sponsorship transfers after divorce or death, and dependants taking employment, which requires a separate work permit despite the existing residence.
