DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre)

The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) is a special economic zone established by Dubai Law No. 9 of 2004 with its own independent legal system based on English common law, its own courts, and its own financial regulator — the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). Federal UAE civil and commercial laws do not apply inside DIFC except for criminal and certain regulatory matters; instead, bespoke DIFC Contract, Companies, Employment, and Insolvency Laws govern business. DIFC hosts banks, asset managers, insurers, family offices, law firms, and fintechs, and its courts have become a preferred forum for complex cross-border disputes. Judgments of the DIFC courts are enforceable inside DIFC, across the UAE through domestic recognition procedures, and in many foreign jurisdictions through bilateral arrangements.
