Attestation in the UAE refers to the domestic authentication of a document by a UAE government authority — most commonly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC). It is one of the final links in the chain that allows a document issued abroad, or one issued inside the UAE that is destined for abroad, to be legally usable. MOFAIC attests documents that have already been notarised or certified by the relevant UAE ministry — education for academic certificates, health for medical reports, economic development for commercial documents, and justice for legal instruments. Attested documents are required for employment visa applications, family reunification, school enrolments, business setup, and court filings. Fees and processing times depend on whether the attestation is standard or expedited.
