Trade Name
الاسم التجاري
A trade name is the registered name under which a business operates in the UAE, reserved and approved through the economic department or free zone authority before a licence is issued. Approval rules screen names for similarity with existing businesses, misleading content, and restricted words; certain terms require special consents, and names must usually be transliterated consistently between Arabic and English. The trade name attaches to the licence and commercial register and can itself be a valuable asset, transferable with the business. It is distinct from a trademark: registering a trade name does not by itself protect a brand across the UAE for goods and services — that requires trademark registration with the Ministry of Economy — and the gap between the two regularly surprises businesses fighting copycats. You meet it at incorporation, in rebranding exercises, in franchise documentation, and in disputes where a competitor adopts a confusingly similar name.
