Freelance Permit
تصريح العمل الحر
A freelance permit authorises an individual to work independently in the UAE — selling services in their own name without an employment contract tying them to a single employer. Two parallel systems issue them: MOHRE's freelance work permit for the mainland, and freelance licences or permits from individual free zones (media, tech, education and others have dedicated schemes). The permit solves the core legal problem of freelancing in the UAE, which is that working without a permit or licence is unlawful even for residents; it also anchors self-sponsorship routes, since holders can qualify for residence options such as the Green Visa without an employer sponsor. Practical considerations include which activities the permit covers, whether the freelancer can sponsor dependants, invoicing and corporate tax registration thresholds, and the common compliance trap of full-time employees moonlighting without their situation being properly permitted.
