Basic Salary
Basic salary is the core wage component stated in a UAE employment contract, excluding allowances for housing, transport, and other benefits. The split between basic and allowances is one of the most financially consequential clauses in any UAE contract because several major entitlements are calculated on basic salary only — end-of-service gratuity above all, plus cash-in-lieu of annual leave and certain compensation figures — while others use the total (gross) wage. Employers therefore have an incentive to compress the basic component, and a common dispute pattern involves contracts registering an artificially low basic salary against large 'allowances', shrinking the gratuity. Courts and MOHRE work from the contract registered with the ministry, so employees should verify the basic/allowance split before signing, and lawyers should request the registered contract — not the internal HR letter — when calculating what a departing employee is actually owed.
