Remote Work Visa (Virtual Working Programme)

The remote work visa lets a foreign national live in the UAE for one renewable year while working remotely for an employer or business located outside the country. Applicants prove ongoing foreign employment or business ownership, a minimum monthly income set by the programme, and health insurance valid in the UAE; the visa is self-sponsored and does not permit taking UAE employment, which would require a separate work permit and status change. Introduced alongside Dubai's virtual working programme and adopted federally, it formalised the digital-nomad arrangement that previously ran improperly on tourist visas. Holders get genuine resident infrastructure — Emirates ID, bank accounts, tenancy, school enrolment, and family sponsorship under the applicable rules. The legal questions it raises are mostly boundary issues: when remote work for foreign clients shades into UAE-based activity requiring a licence, tax residence consequences in the home country, and renewing or converting to a Green or Golden visa as the person's UAE footprint deepens.
