Promissory Note
السند الإذني (الكمبيالة الإذنية)
A promissory note is a written, unconditional promise by one party to pay a fixed sum to another on demand or at a set date, signed in the form required by the UAE Commercial Transactions Law. As a commercial paper it has procedural superpowers: the holder can pursue the streamlined payment order route rather than full litigation, and the note itself is strong documentary evidence of the debt without needing to prove the underlying transaction. Lenders, landlords and suppliers commonly take promissory notes as security alongside or instead of cheques — a practice that grew after the cheque decriminalisation reforms shifted cheque enforcement to civil routes. Defences exist (forgery, incapacity, payment), but the starting position favours the holder. It matters because signing one is close to signing a ready-made judgment against yourself if you default. You meet it in loan documentation, car finance, rent arrangements and settlement agreements where the creditor wants fast, paper-based enforcement.
