WPS (Wage Protection System)
The Wage Protection System (WPS) is the UAE's electronic salary-monitoring scheme, run by MOHRE with the Central Bank. Mainland private-sector employers must pay registered employees' salaries through approved banks and exchange houses, generating records that the ministry monitors automatically. If a company pays late, underpays, or stops paying, WPS flags it and MOHRE can freeze new work permits, impose fines and escalate to inspections — making WPS the main enforcement tool against wage abuse. For employees, WPS records are powerful evidence: in a labour dispute, the WPS transfer history shows exactly what was paid and when, cutting through disputes about cash payments. Employers meet WPS in monthly payroll compliance; employees encounter it when salaries stop arriving; lawyers pull WPS records as the backbone of unpaid-wage claims.
