Wage Protection System (WPS)
The Wage Protection System is the UAE's electronic salary-monitoring mechanism: mainland employers must pay registered employees through approved banks and exchange houses so MOHRE can verify, in near real time, that contractual wages are actually paid and on time. Companies that miss payroll runs face escalating consequences — blocks on new work permits, fines, downgraded company classification, and referral for prosecution in serious cases — which makes WPS records the single most useful evidence source in unpaid-wage disputes. For employees, a WPS gap is objective proof that salary was late or short, often enough to justify resignation without notice and to anchor a MOHRE complaint. For employers, WPS compliance is an operational must: payroll must match the contract filed with MOHRE, so undocumented allowances or split cash payments create both WPS exposure and end-of-service calculation disputes later.
