Cassation
Cassation is the final stage of review in the UAE court hierarchy, handled by the Court of Cassation in each judicial system (Federal Supreme Court for the federal judiciary, Dubai Court of Cassation for Dubai, Abu Dhabi Cassation for Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah Cassation). Its role is not to retry the case but to ensure that the lower courts correctly applied the law. Grounds of challenge are limited to points of law — misapplication or misinterpretation of a statute, violation of procedural rules, or failure to state adequate reasons. A cassation appeal must be filed by an advocate admitted before the Court of Cassation within the statutory period (usually 60 days). The court can quash the judgment and remit the case to the Court of Appeal for re-trial, or in certain circumstances decide the matter finally itself.
