How UAE leave entitlements work

Leave for private-sector employees in the UAE is set by Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 and its Executive Regulations. Annual leave is 30 calendar days per year once you have completed one full year of service. If you have worked between 6 and 12 months, you accrue 2 days of annual leave for each completed month. For service under 6 months, annual leave is at the employer's discretion, so this tool shows it as zero or discretionary rather than guessing a figure.

Unused annual leave can be encashed when you leave. The daily rate is your monthly wage divided by 30, and the encashment is that daily rate multiplied by the number of unused days. The law distinguishes the wage base: leave salary taken during employment is calculated on your full (gross) wage, while encashment of unused days on termination is calculated on your basic wage. Enter the wage that applies to your situation, and check your contract or the official portal if you are unsure which figure applies.

Sick leave, after probation, is up to 90 days per year, split into three bands: the first 15 days at full pay, the next 30 days at half pay, and the following 45 days unpaid. There is no sick-leave pay during probation, and no pay where the illness results from the worker's own misconduct. You must notify your employer within 3 days and provide a medical certificate.

Maternity leave is 60 days — 45 days at full pay and 15 days at half pay — with up to 45 additional unpaid days for a related illness, and further entitlements if the baby is born sick or with a disability. Parental leave is 5 paid working days for both parents within 6 months of the birth, regardless of length of service. These figures are estimates only; your exact entitlement depends on your contract, your free-zone rules (DIFC and ADGM have their own employment laws), and your individual circumstances.

Yes. Parental leave is 5 paid working days for both parents, to be taken within 6 months of the child's birth, regardless of length of service, under Article 32 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.

Do these leave rules apply in DIFC and ADGM free zones?

DIFC and ADGM are financial free zones with their own employment laws, so the figures here may differ there. This calculator reflects the federal UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021). If you work in a free zone, check the rules that apply to you or ask a UAE labour lawyer.

Estimate only — not legal advice

This calculator gives an indicative estimate based on the federal UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021). Your actual entitlement depends on your contract, free-zone rules, probation status and individual circumstances. Where the official figure is uncertain, defer to the official u.ae portal.
