    Article (1) The following words and expressions, wherever mentioned in this Decree, will have the meaning indicated opposite each of them unless the context implies otherwise: UAE: The United Arab Emirates. Emirate: The Emirate of Dubai. Ruler: His Highness the Ruler of Dubai. ZIFE: The Zayed International Foundation for the Environment. Award: The Emirates Appreciation Award for the Environment established pursuant to this Decree. Committee: The Supreme Committee of the Zayed International Prize for the Environment. ©2019 The Supreme Legislation Committee in the Emirate of Dubai 1 Every effort has been made to produce an accurate and complete English version of this legislation.     Article 2

    Article (2) Pursuant to this Decree, an award named the “Emirates Appreciation Award for the Environment” is established. The Award is hereby affiliated to the ZIFE. Objectives of the Award

    Article 3

    Article (3) The Award aims to: 1. encourage individuals and corporations to conduct research and introduce distinguished innovations that help address environmental problems or contribute to promoting the concept of sustainable development; 2. honour individuals and corporations that make outstanding contributions to preserving and protecting the environment in the UAE as a cornerstone of achieving sustainable development; 3. support and encourage distinguished national individual and group businesses, programmes, and initiatives, which are aimed at protecting the environment and ensuring its sustainability for coming generations; 4. contribute to promoting an environment-friendly culture, and raising awareness among community members of the importance of protecting the environment; and 5. highlight individual and corporate efforts as an example to follow in terms of compliance with environmental standards.     Article 4

    Article (4) The Award will be managed in accordance with the provisions of this Decree and the ZIFE charter. Duties and Powers of the Committee

    Article 5

    Article (5) The Committee is the highest authority responsible for managing the affairs of the Award, developing its general policy, and administering its work in a manner that achieves its objectives. For these purposes, the Committee will have the authority to: 1. approve the criteria, standards, and conditions for selecting the winners of the Award in its various categories;

    Decree No. (34) of 2011 Establishing the Emirates Appreciation Award for the Environment Page 3 of 5 2. approve the annual budget and financial statements of the Award, and submit the same to the Department of Finance for approval; 3. approve the nominations for the Award; 4. schedule and organise the Award-granting ceremony; 5. form specialised judging panels and work sub-teams and determine their duties in line with the activities and objectives of the Award; 6. submit annual reports on the various activities of the Award to the Ruler; and 7. perform any other duties related to the objectives of the Award as assigned to it by the Ruler. Frequency of the Award

    Article 6

    Article (6) The Award will be granted once every two (2) years by the Ruler or his authorised representative at a special ceremony organised for this purpose. Categories of the Award

    Article (7) of this Decree. 3. Subject to the provisions of the ZIFE charter, the Award may be granted to the heirs of a deceased winner. Withholding the Awards

    Article (7) The Award will have the following categories: 1. the environmental personality award; 2. the industrial enterprise award; 3. the educational institution award; 4. the innovation, invention, and environmental research award; and 5. the media and environmental awareness award. Value of the Award's Prizes

    Article (8) a. The total value of the Award’s prizes will be one million Dirhams (AED 1,000,000.00). This amount will be divided among the following categories as follows: 1. two hundred thousand Dirhams (AED200,000.00) for the environmental personality prize; 2. two hundred thousand Dirhams (AED 200,000.00) for the industrial enterprise prize;

In addition to the monetary value of the Award’s prizes referred to in paragraph (a) of this Article, winners will receive an Award honorary shield and certificate of appreciation signed by the Ruler. Procedures for Granting the Award

    Article (9) 1. The Committee will submit the names of the Award winners to the Ruler for approval. 2. The Award may be granted to more than one winner in any of the categories referred to in

    Article (10) The Committee may decide to withhold the Award in any of the categories referred to in Article (7) of this Decree where there are no candidates for the Award, or where none of the candidates meets the Award eligibility criteria. Financial Resources of the Award

    Article 11

    Article (11) The financial resources of the Award will consist of: 1. the support allocated to the Award in the general budget of the Government of Dubai; and 2. the donations, grants, bequests, and gifts accepted by the Committee.

    Article 12

    Article (12) The Committee will issue the bylaws and resolutions required for the implementation of the provisions of this Decree. Publication and Commencement
