Inheritance for non-Muslim expats — can I just rely on my home-country will?

Asked by Anonymous·Apr 19, 2026·1 answers
British and Indian couple living in Dubai with two children and property + bank accounts in the UAE worth roughly AED 8M total. I have an English will. Will it be honoured here without registration, or do I need a DIFC Wills Service Centre will?

A foreign will is enforceable in principle under Federal Decree-Law 41 of 2022 but in practice UAE courts often default to Sharia distribution unless the will is locally registered and explicitly invokes the home-country law election. The DIFC Wills Service Centre (open to non-Muslims worldwide, not just DIFC residents) registers a will that binds UAE courts on UAE-situated assets. For AED 8M exposure, register a DIFC will — the AED 10,000 fee is trivial against the cost of intestate litigation.
