Can I cancel my gym membership in Dubai after moving to another emirate?

Moving emirates does not automatically dissolve a contract, but your position is stronger than the gym is letting on. UAE consumer protection law requires contract terms to be fair and clearly disclosed, and two parts of their stance are vulnerable: an auto-renewal you say was never clearly brought to your attention, and an insistence on full payment for a service they cannot practically deliver, since they have no branch in the emirate where you now live. Start by re-reading the contract for a relocation, freeze or transfer clause — many gym agreements contain one that front-desk staff do not volunteer. Then send a written cancellation request citing your relocation, attaching proof such as your new tenancy or an employer letter, and explicitly reject the renewal in the same message so a second term cannot be claimed against you. If they still insist, file a complaint through Dubai's consumer protection channels under the Department of Economy and Tourism, with the contract and correspondence attached — gyms are licensed businesses, and a regulator complaint frequently produces the settlement the front desk refused. Offering a reasonable exit fee instead of the full year can also unlock a deal. If they hold firm, a UAE lawyer can assess whether that auto-renewal clause survives scrutiny at all.
