How do I register a foreign marriage certificate so it is recognized in the UAE?

My husband and I married in Cyprus in 2019. We never registered it in the UAE. Now we need it recognized for residency and for our daughter's birth certificate. What is the process?

Custody of children after divorce when one parent wants to relocate abroad

Jurisdiction follows the child's habitual residence — Dubai courts have jurisdiction because the child lives in the UAE. For a mixed-nationality marriage with a Muslim UAE national father, the case will fall under Sharia personal status courts (not the non-Muslim civil family court). Relocation requires the father's consent or a court order finding it in the child's best interests; UAE courts historically resist relocation that severs paternal contact. Negotiated visitation schedule with extended Manila summer visits is the typical compromise.

Yes. File an execution petition (طلب تنفيذ) at the Sharjah Family Execution Court attaching the divorce decree and the unpaid invoices. The court issues a salary attachment order served on his employer's HR — they must withhold the monthly amount plus arrears directly from his salary. If he changes employers, the order travels via the central labour registry. Travel ban is also available for arrears exceeding three months under Article 322 of the Civil Procedure Law.

Civil divorce for non-Muslim expats in Abu Dhabi — what is the actual timeline?

Confirmed. One trap: if either party has assets in the home country, structure the consent decree with explicit reciprocal-enforcement language so it is recognised by an English court without re-litigation. The Abu Dhabi court will sign off on a private settlement agreement on division and custody that you draft beforehand — bring it ready, not as a draft for the judge to write.

Inheritance for non-Muslim expats — can I just rely on my home-country will?

A foreign will is enforceable in principle under Federal Decree-Law 41 of 2022 but in practice UAE courts often default to Sharia distribution unless the will is locally registered and explicitly invokes the home-country law election. The DIFC Wills Service Centre (open to non-Muslims worldwide, not just DIFC residents) registers a will that binds UAE courts on UAE-situated assets. For AED 8M exposure, register a DIFC will — the AED 10,000 fee is trivial against the cost of intestate litigation.
