What is a GDRFA return permit and how do residents outside the UAE apply?

سأله Anonymous·10 يونيو 2026·1 إجابات
I've been outside the UAE for many months caring for a sick parent, and friends say my residence visa might be at risk because of the long absence. I've seen people mention a GDRFA permission to return, but I don't understand who needs it or how to apply from abroad. How does the process work for residents stuck outside the country?

A UAE residence visa generally lapses if you stay outside the country for more than six continuous months, but there is a route to request permission to return without losing it. For Dubai-issued visas, the request goes to the GDRFA, Dubai's residency authority; holders of visas issued in other emirates use the federal ICP's equivalent service. The application is usually made online through the authority's website or app, often by your sponsor in the UAE if you are employer- or family-sponsored, and it should explain the reason for the long absence with supporting documents; in your situation, medical reports about your parent's condition are exactly the kind of evidence that helps. A fee applies and approval is discretionary, so a clear, well-documented application matters. Apply and wait for the approval before booking travel, because arriving without it risks being refused boarding or treated as holding an expired visa. If permission is refused, the fallback is cancelling the old visa and re-entering on a new entry permit, which your sponsor can arrange. An immigration lawyer or registered service agent in the UAE can manage the application for you if the file is complicated.
