Bounced cheque case filed against me — can I still travel?

سأله Anonymous·11 أبريل 2026·2 إجابات
My ex-business partner filed a criminal complaint over a cheque for AED 240,000 that bounced. I have not received any formal summons but I am scheduled to fly to Istanbul next week. Will I be stopped at the airport?

Possibly yes. The 2022 reform decriminalised cheque bounce for amounts under AED 200,000 — your AED 240,000 case is still a criminal matter. Once the public prosecutor accepts the complaint, a travel ban is registered with immigration automatically and you will be detained at departure. Check your status at the relevant police app (Dubai Police or Abu Dhabi Police) BEFORE going to the airport. If a ban exists, settling or providing acceptable security lifts it within 48-72 hours.

Add: a partial settlement plus an undertaking to pay the balance often persuades the prosecutor to lift the travel ban while the case continues. Engage counsel before the next prosecutorial summons — appearing voluntarily with a payment plan dramatically improves the outcome compared to being arrested at the airport.
